RAT PACK NEW YEAR
In 1959
America expressed it's optimism and dreams of the future in it's automotive
designs. We were entering the space age was in full swing and rockets, jets and fins could
be seen everywhere. No car exemplified this era more than the 1959 Cadillac
with it’s sharply angled fins and rocket shaped tail lights. Can you just
imagine it's New Years Eve and you are cruisin with the Rat Pack down Las
Vegas Blvd headed for a wild night at the Sands to welcome in the decade of
the 1960's.

Jets, wings and rockets, were ever present during the
post war. They represented a new age and entry into the now modern
world. Many cars during this period sported chrome hood ornaments that
lead the way into the future and jet age. The iconic hood emblem of
the Oldsmobile 88 from 1953
was a prime example.

It was 1959 and the space race was on, and America's
imagination turned towards the stars and a brave new world. Car designers
of the day incorporated the mood of the country into the radically new
jet-age styling that embodied their designs. There are a number of cars
that have become iconic with their representation of this transitional time.
The 1959 Impala, with it's distinctively shaped taillight and sloped rear
fender wings, exemplifier's this era in automotive history.

Mid century was
the beginning of the modern age. Streamline styling was evident in most every
design of the era. Cars were transitioning from boxy utilitarian tools to
personal and sporty reflections of one’s personality.
The 56 Bel Air had great appeal to a youth that had one eye on the future and
the other on the road ahead.

Like Jaws trolling the freeways, this land shark's fin
cut through the air like a knife. The rear fender fins were standard fare
for all Cadillac’s of the late fifties and sixties This 1960
Caddy sported a cleaner more angular fin that it's predecessors.

The Porsche
911 shape has endured since 1965. It has evolved over the years but every
model is instantly recognizable as a 911. The 1998 model was the last year
Porsche used the air cooled motor, which to many enthusiasts was an end of
an era. The Turbo model is a highly collectable car, and many purists
consider this to be the best looking 911 ever produced. This was the last
model to have what was affectionately know as the whale tail.
