LAST LAP

In 1970 there was an epic duel that any Porsche or Ferrari lover should know. Two 917's and a Ferrari 512S bang and bump their way around Circuit de la Sarthe as they fight for the win on the very last lap in the most closely contested race in the history of Le Mans. This stunning werk depicts the fictitious outcome of the 1970 24 Heures du Mans.

One of the greatest race cars every created.  The mighty Porsche 917 in Gulf livery is just plain iconic.  Abstract art never looked so good.

The Martini Livery is one of the most unmistakable marks a race car can have. The Martini colors have been synonomys with winning race cars for decades. This early 911 track car is just one example of the many Porsches that have worn the Martini heritage proudly

Since 1955, the Porsche Owners Club has been having fun tossing their little bundles of joy around race tracks across the country.  This work depicts the feel of a time long past.  Period vehicles from the early 1970s are seen here at The Streets of Willow race track near Edwards Air Force Base in California. Club members are seen here paying their $10 entrance fee for a full day of frolicking on the track.  Ten bucks today will probably get you a parking space to just spectate!  Gazing on this work will take you back to a more simple time ...before computers."

1970 was a year that many feel was the pinnacle of racing.  Raw power, no restrictions and danger at every turn.  Ferrari and Porsche fought it out like two heavyweight prize fighters.  Here you see the Ferrari 512S drifting wide as it accelerates out of Arnage corner at the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans. The late night spectators turn their attention to the next car to hit the apex as the Ferrari blasts down to the next chicane.

A two-litre version, the W-RS was developed in 1961. Initially fitted with a 4-cylinder engine, the car was later fitted with an enlarged flat-8 air-cooled engine from the Porsche 804 Formula One car which was developed to produce240 horsepower (180 kW) A W-RS finished 8th at Le Mans in 1963. The W-RS continued Porsche's success in the European Hill Climb Championship with Edgar Barth claiming the title in 1963. Porsche would go on to win a European Hill Climb Championship every year until 1982, a total of 42 titles. The W-RS continued racing until 1964 when it was replaced by the 904.

The R8 won a hat trick at Le Mans in 2000-2002, campaigned by Audi Sport Infineon Team Joest and driven by Tom Kristensen, Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela. First time out in 2000, the team won a 1-2-3 finish, which was just a small preview of what this all-new Audi was capable of. Since then, the Audi R8 has won numerous championships and races, including further wins for 'privateer' teams at Le Mans in 2004 and 2005.

Who could forget Vic Elford jumping out to the lead in the 1970 Le Mans.  Clearly the fastest car on the track, it retired early with mechanical problems.  Vic drove this car like he stole it.  You can see some outstanding footage of Vic in the  in the movie Le Mans.  Now over 40 years later the 917 is always a crowd favorite at historic races.

1100 horsepower makes this one of the most powerful race cars ever produced.   In 1975 this powerhouse was specifically prepared for a high speed run, Donohue lapped the Talladega race track at an average of 221 mph, setting a new world record. A fitting finale for the Porsche 917's magnificent career. This Porsche just sold at auction for $5 million.

Many consider this the most beautiful Ferrari ever produced. In 1966 the 330 battled the Ford GT at race tracks everywhere.  Although Ford dominated the 66-69 seasons, Ferrari certainly won many a contest with it's good looks alone. If you look closely enough you can see the ghost of Enzo behind the wheel.

The powerful Chadwick "Great Six" is seen here at the 1909 Fairmount Park Roadrace. The Parkin's, Joe and mechanic father, could have won that race if it weren't for so many flat tires. These were the days when auto racing was like a rodeo on wheels.

In the 1930's Auto Union fought it out with great Marques like Mercedes on the European Gran Prix circuit. This D-type open-wheel 'Silver Arrow' Grand Prix car has a rear-mounted 3 liter Supercharged V12 engine.  Hans Stuck, the "Bergkφnig" or "King of the Mountains" is seen here posing with the D-type.

Michael Schumacher, seven-times World Champion, is widely regarded as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time. He holds many formula one driving records , including most championships, race victories, fastest laps, pole positions, points scored and most races won in a single season. This swooping abstract almost vibrates off your wall with it's impressions of speed and motion. Seen here is the hot red helmeted Schumister compressing that Mercedes suspension as he dips through a chicane in his Silver Bullet.

Sebastian Vettel the back to back, two time World Champion, blasts off in a splash of vibrant colors. The snorting bull is far ahead of the field as Vettel exits turn one from his familiar pole position. The raging, snorting F1 beast is ready to lift off for yet another flight to victory.

Former world champion, Kimi Raikkonen pilots his fiery red Ferrari through the twisty's, always seemingly on the razor's edge as his little red wagon twitches, slips, wiggles and dances through each turn. If you look close enough you can almost see this redhead tap dance sideways on exit as Kimi settles her down heading into the next apex. Talk about dancing with the stars!

Porsche, what more can you say? This manufacturer has dominated racing for over half a century. During the early years, Porsche seemed to build street cars to pay for their racing program, not the other way around. There is a true and pure love for racing in this breed and their entry into The American Le Mans series in the late 2000Ζs proved to be no exception. They dominated the series in LMP2 and many times won overall. The Streets of Long Beach could not be a better place to depict the RS Spyder leading the field with Patrick Long as it's pilot. This very meticulous werk will surprise you with all it's fun detail depicting the Southern California life style. It's like playing, Where is Waldo.
